HIGHER PROFITS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. WELLINGTON, Thursday. A working profit of £1 19,778 is shown py the Railway Department’s accounts for the ‘first four weeks, ended April 26, of the new financial year. This period includes five days of the strike, which continued for three days beyond that covered by the present return. Nevertheless, the profits were higher than in the corresponding period of last year, when £108.197 were earned. The increase is, of course, chiefly attributable to the fact that Easter fell in April this, year, whereas last year the March period included Easter. The gross earnings for the period were £173,304, a decrease of £20,702, while expenses were £353,526, a decline of £32,283. Earnings in the North Island were £276,651, a decline of £14,975, while expenses. £204,678, shewed a’reduction of £10,625. Profits were £71,973 a decline of £4350. Revenue in the South Island was £196.653. .a decline of £5727, while expenses were £148,848, a reduction rf £21.658. Profits were £47,805, an increase of £15,931.
