—. e ALLEGATIONS AGABNST EGYRTIAN. IMAGINARY BABY." Mmc Fshmy, the Frenchwoman who was found not guilty at the Old Bailey, London, last September, of the murder of her husband. Ah Kamcl Fahmy Bey. a rich Egyptian who was shot dead at the Savoy Hotel, gave evidence before M. Barnaud, the examining magistrate, in Paris, in a remarkable case in which an Egyptian, Cassah Bey, is charged with attempted fraud. Mmc. Fahmy told a strange story qf an alleged plot to register the birth and then the death of an imaginary baby so that she might claim the largo fortune left by her husband. Her examination lasted four hours. She gave her name as Marguerite Alibert, and told M. Barnaud that she was 33.
"I know Oassah' Bey in the first place," she said, "because he condueled a campaign against me in Egypt, where I am bringing a lawsuit aga'nst my loto husband's heirs for the return of my marriage settlement. That is why I did not at once denounce his intrigues. "He pointed out to me that under Mahommedan law I could claim a considerable portion of Fahmy Bey's estate if I had a child. In return for £BOO he said he could arrange to obtain false birth and death certificates which would give me the right to sue my husband's heirs for half the estate. "He kept on bothering mi. and finally on April 4, when I returned from Cannes, I determined to inform the police. They advised me to preiend to consent to the plan so that all the details might be revealed,"
Mme. Fahmy described the final meeting with Cassah Bey, when two detectives were hidden in the room, and how she went with him to it maternity home, where the Egyptian btated arrangements might be' made for obtaining the false certificates. Afterwards the police detained Cas--snh Bey.
