WAIKATO ROADS
WHY ARE THEY BAD? When the matter of Waikato roads was mentioned at the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce last night, Mr D. L. Smith said a whole volume could be written about Waikato roads As a newcomer, Mr Seymour asked why Waikato roads were worse than those elsewhere. Mr Hobbs said the trouble was due to lack of supervision and also to over speeding. In England, he said, heavy laden vehicles were limited to low speeds and the roads remained good. Mr Seymour suggested thgt if the latter was the case then vehicles should be taxed on speed, say £i per mile per hour. Mr Seymour said he was of opinion that a comprehensive report on the roads generally should be prepared by some competent authority with a view to a general betterment of roads. He saw no reason why they should not have as good roads as in America. Some effort should be made to gel local bodies to work together so that there would be some uniform scheme. He thought the Highways Bill did not go far enough as it embraced only arterial roads. It was decided to instruct the executive to arrange for an address on Waikato roads by the best qualified specialist available.
