LANDING OF CAPTAIN COOK
PROPOSED MEMORIAL. MONUMENT AT HAURAKI PLAINS. (By Telegraph.—Special to Times.) WELLINGTON, Saturday. A movement is being made for the erection of a monument on the Hauraki Plains to mark the historic landing of Captain Cook. Records show that Captain Cook landed on the plains near the Thames River on Monday, November 29, 17G9, and his diaries contain interesting references to the beautiful timber trees then existing. It is understood that the Government has been approached with a view to providing assistance for the erection of the proposed monument.
