RIVER SHIPMENTS.
TRADE WITH SOUTH ISLAND. SECOND CARGO ARRIVES. The s.s. Freetrader, which is now lying at the Hamilton wharf, brought the local cargo from the second direct shipment \of goods from the South Island. The s.s. Progress, the boat by which the cargo was shipped direct from Lyttelton to Port Waikato, reached her destination after a good trip, and the work of discharging the cargo for Waikato River ports was immediately undertaken. In this latter respect, it may be stated that' there is every facility for rapid discharge of the cargo to the river steamers. In all the s.s. Freetrader had about 100 tons for discharge at Huntly, Ngaruawahia, Taupiri and Hamilton. Grain was' the principal item of the cargo for this destination. Everything points to the new service being a success. Those who have been closely associated with it claim that it is more prompt than the old order in reception of goods, while there is also an improvement on freights in the majority of lines. Another all important factor is that the cargo by the two shipments so far undertaken has arrived in perfect condition.
The discharge facilities at this end were commented upon this morning by one of the consignees, who maintained that if the landing were made opposite Bryce Street, instead of at the Traffic Bridge, it would be a big improvement. That point was near the centre of the town, and handy to the railway, while it avoided the heavy pull up the hill that lorries at present had to undertake.
