ACCIDENT IN BATHS.
GIRL NEARLY DROWNED.
SUBMERGED FOR SOME MINUTES
A fatal drowning accident was narrowly averted in the Hamilton Municipal Baths yesterday afternoon, a girl of li years, Agnes Wallace, daughter of Mr'.l. C. Wallace, Hamilton East, being pulled out of the water in an unconscious condition, after being under the water for some minutes. She was swimming with a number of companions from the Hamilton East School, and announced her intention as the others were leaving the water to have a last dive. After taking the plunge, however, she failed to appear, having apparently struck her head on the bottom of the bath. Frantic efforts were immediately made, to drag her out. The bath-keeper (Mr Robinson), although not an experienced swimmer, jumped in fully clothed, but could not locate the child. An employee in the Council offices, Mr E. Taine, however, rushed to the scene and was able to pull the child in an unconscious condition lo the surface. All forms of artificial respiration were tried, but it was not before several hours had elapsed that any sign of recovery was noticeable. She was then taken' to the Waikato Hospital, where she is now making satisfactory progress.
