WAIKATO TRAINS.
SUGGESTED ALTERATIONS,
SUPPORTED BY CHAMBER,
The General Manager of Railways, communicating with the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce last evening, reported that the Department’s representative had visited Hamilton and discussed suggested alterations to the present railway service in tho Waikato with several representative citizens. The suggestions, which were, briefly, as follows, were submitted for the approval of the Chamber:— (1) That the 9.45 a.m. FranktonAuokland train be eliminated from the time-table, and that a fast train be run from Hamilton to Auckland at 7 a.m. to take its place; (2) That a train leave Frankton for Auckland between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., to lake the place of the one at 2.30 p.m.; (3) Ghat on one day of the week (Thursday) a late train should leave Frankton for Putaruru at 4 p.m.; (4) that the present 4 p.m. train from Auckland to Frankton leave Auckland at 4.30 p.m., and bo accelerated to arrive at Frankton at tile same time as at present; (5) that the Pukemiro branch trains be run to connect with the main line trains so that residents on the branch may visit Hamilton, do their shopping, and return to their homes tho sanu day. The -chairman (Mr A. M. Bisley) remarked that unfortunately Hamilton’s proposals had not met with approval in the smaller towns. If. however. trains could not be run to suit tiie dwellers in these towns, there was no reason why Hamilton should not have special trains run for the convenience of the Hamilton people, particularly as far as the direct, service to Auckland was concerned. Palmerston North, a town scarcely bigger than Hamilton, lrad its early morning train to Wellington, enabling tho public to visit the city and return the same day. Mr Gilbert remarked that the suggestions outlined met with the approbation of the people along Hie lino north of Hamilton.
The Chamber decided unanimously to support the suggestions as outlined and to invite the co-operation of H> • local bodies and other bodies interested in having the proposed alterations carried into effect.
