AUSTRALIAN TARIFF.
RECIPROCITY WITH CANADA. United Press Association. MELBOURNE, July 13. In the House of Representatives Mr Bruce, in reply to a question, said negotiations for a. reciprocal agreement were still progressing. A treaty in regard to Australian fruits was a most important part of the proposed agreement, and the Canadian Ministry would not settle the question of dried fruits apart from a general trade treaty. The Commonwealth Ministry could not accept all the demands made by Canada, but .there was a hope that a compromise would be reached. In reference to this the Sydney Morning Herald states that it is known that Canada definitely offered Australia free entry for her dried fruits. In exchange Canada wants free entry for her timber, and is also probably seeking preference on tinned salmon.
