MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

BY-LAW CASES. (Before Mr H. A. Young, S.M.) The first case of its kind and one which should 'have the effect of doing away with some of the unearthly noises created by motor cycles as they travel through the main street was heard at the Magistrate's Court, Hamilton, to-day, when a youth, Alfred Hodgkinson, was charged with allowing the exhaust gas escape from <lhe engine without passing through a proper silencer. Defendant was fined 10s and costs 7s. Another reproach on the condition of some of our roads w r as the plea put forward by "W. L. Ready, charged with driving his motor car on the footpath of Grey Street past its junction with Cambridge Road. Defendant stated that he was driving a new car out for inspection by a prospective buyer, and did not feel inclined to go through the mud. He was fined £3 and court costs. For carrying on business as a hawker without a license James Young Robinson, whose excuse was that he did not think he had to take out a license as he had made the articles himself, was fined 10s and costs 7s. On a charge of leaving a horse and cart standing- in the street without a chain being attached to the wheel, Robert Hayes was fined 20s and costs 7s. A boy was fined 2s 6d without costs on a charge of riding a bicycle without a bell being attached, another youngster being mulcted into payment of Is for a similar offence. For various minor offences under Motor Regulations the following were dealt with as appended:—Gerald L. Stead, costs only 7s; John Mills Griffiths, fined 10s and costs 7s; Percy Mitchell, fined 15s and costs 7s on each of two charges; and Francis J. Gane, costs only 7s.
