PROHIBITION IN MANITOBA
MODIFICATION CARRIED. A GOVERNMENT MONOPOLY. .Australian and N.Z. Cnbie Assn. Received June 25, 11.30 a.m. WINNIPEG, June 24. A referendum is being held in Manitoba on the proposal to adopt a system of Government sale of liquor to take the place of complete prohibition, which is now the law of the province. A majority of 30,000 has so far been recorded in favour of the moderation of the Liquor Act. The returns are sufficiently complete to make the result unalterable by the outstanding rural vote. It is evident that many women obviously voted wet. Another vote will be taken on July 11 to decide whether beer and wine shall be saleable at hotels and cafes under Government supervision, but the result cannot affect Friday's decision.
