GOLF.
WHY KIRKWOOD FA3LED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn. LONDON, June 22. The " Daily Telegraph," in explanation of Kirkwood's surprising defeat, ! says it was perfectly simple, being due to Seymour's miraculous putting on the home rounds. He hawked out of bunkers to the pinside, and holed putts from every imaginable length, and his mistakes went unpunished. Seymour had only to dig the ball out to somewhere on the green, and dqwn went the putt. These must have been bitter moments for Kirkwood, who had set his heart on winning the tournament to atone for his failure at Troon. He returns to Australia empty handed to join Hagen. The most galling thing from Kirkwood's viewpoint was that from the moment Seymour opened his devastating torrent the Australian only made one bad shot, but this brought about his destruction. HAVERS WINS AGAIN. LONDON, June 23. The Gleneagles £IOOO golf tournament was won by A. G. Havers, who gained the open championship at Troon last week.
