ALLEGED ASSAULT AT SEA.
FIREMAN CHARGED. VICTIM’S CONDITION SERIOUS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. AUCKLAND,. Thursday. At the Police Court, Joseph Thurston, aged 47, a fireman, was charged with having assaulted George Craighead, the fourth engineer of the' steamer Arawa, on the .voyage from Panama, by striking Craighead on the head with a large spanner. The evidence showed that Craighead gave accused instructions to make a signal to, the firemen in the forehold. Accused refused, and when Craighead turned away it is alleged that accused struck him heavily on the back of the head, causing serious injury. The ship’s doctor described Craighead’s condition as very serious. After further evidence had been given, accused pleaded “guilty under great provocation,” and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
