FALSE STATEMENT MADE. CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Frank Smith, news-vendor, aged 70, was ordered lo conic up for sentence when called on for obtaining a pension certificate by means of a false statement. Tlie police gave evidence that Smith failed to declare that he had £l5O in the savings hank. He had declared liis earnings at 30s per week, lie obtained a pension for 10 months, when it was stopped, and he had since refunded £lB wrongly obtained and paid £lB penalty lo the department. The Magistrate said Hie penalties provided by the Act were heavy, but lie was loath to send the man to gaol.
