COMPETITIONS COMMENCED.

ATHLETICS AND FRANKTON.

The Hamilton League 1923 competition, which was commenced on the previous Saturday, was advanced a further stage on Saturday last when, before a fair attendance of the public, Athletics met and defeated City by 44 points to 8, and Frankton proved victorious over United by 17 points to 3.

FRANKTOIt Shortly after the commencement of play Dufty opened Frankton's account by ; goaling from a penalty, Dent following up this success by annexing_a try, which Dufty converted shortly afterwards. Although playing well, United were unable to score in the first half, and whefc the time for the spell came Fraiikton were still seven points to nil. In the second half Dufty again crossed United'slinc, and converting his own try brought Frankton's quota to 12. Frankton again scored shortly afterwards, Grice getting over to score,a try, to which Dufty added the extras; Towards the close Nealie broke through the Frankton defence to score United's only try, and the game ended: Frankton 17, United 3.

CITY v. ATHLETICS. Athletics dominated the position early, Peckham scoring, and Parkinson adding the extra tw r o points. Then Sorensen scored a try, which Parkinson also converted. Stewart made a good run through from half way, but was brought down just on the line. After a good run Peckham kicked over, and Corleison, following up, scored, no goal, however, resulting. Steward was the next to score' for Athletics, but the attempt at converting failed. After a scramble on the line Pilkington crossed over to score a try. which Shortland converted. Eariy in the second half Parkinson aded'd another try to Athletes' quota, the kick,'however, failing. City's scoring account was opened by Neil, who kicked a penaTty goal. City were now playing a much better game, and Latimer, as a result of a good run, scored the first try for City. Then Peckham, by a nice solo effort, scored between the posts a try which he himself converted. Athletics' total was ' shortly afterwards further increased by a try scored by Pilkington, which Sorenson converted. Following this, Sorenson broke through the sorely pressed City defence, but his try was not converted. Then followed another try for Athletics, scored by Pilkington, and converted by Bond, while towards the close of the game McPherson crossed over, and scored for City. The game then ended with the scores: Athletics 44, City 8.

JUNIOR GAMES. tra the No. 1 ground Whitiora defeated Athletios by 10 points to nil. Andrews and Fisher scored tries, L. Taylor converting both. On the other ground Frankton played United, and emerged victorious by nine-points to nil, C. Taylor, Moon, and Styles each notching a try.
