ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.

OPENING OF SEASON. The opening of the season of the above code, as far as local interests were concerned, was.a friendly match between Hamilton United and the Wanderers. The former side are new entrants to Soccer l'anks, but their personnel comprises members of the defunct Y.M.C.A. team of last season, some of the Wanderers team with a sprinkling of new players not previously seen in Hamilton district. United were practically at full strength, while the Wanderers had a purely experimental side out, mainly with the idea of letting the new men show their calibre, and it must have been very gratifying to the Wanderers executive the way their eleven shaped, though the United were full value for the three goals to nothing they won by. Hoy, of the United eleven, was the outstanding player of the debutantes, apart from scoring all the goals in the match, although he will meet much stronger defences as the season goes on than he did on Saturday. Potts (outside left) and Smith (centre half) played, very well indeed for the Wanderers, in fact all the , new men acquitted themselves most creditably, though, obviously, as only to be expected so early in the season, some of them had had ■; enough before the Whistle blew for time.
