MAEROA STREET BRIDGE.
CLOSED TO HEAVY TRAFFIC.
The assistant borough engineer (Mr Worley) reported to the Hamilton Borough Council last evening on having inspected the Maeroa Street bridge, which was dangerous and unsafe for vehicular traffic, and it seemed to him that the Council's notice on the bridge to that effect was / insufficient protection of the Council's responsibility. Mr Worley recommended that the bridge be closed to vehicular traffic pending repairs or reconstruction.
The clerk reported that the bridge was closed on Tuesday, and a barricade erected at each end to permit foot passengers to pass, but which excluded all classes of stock and vehicles. In answer to Cr. Farrer, the Mayor said that no motor-car would be allowed on the bridge. He admitted that it would be a slight disadvantage, but traffic of this and heavy nature could use the Stokes' Gully route. The action was confirmed, and it was decided to advise the Waipa County Council of the step? taken. The Council later adopted a report of its Legal and Finance Committee concerning a draft letter which had been forwarded to Mr R. W. Holmes, engineer of Wellington, in regard to latter considering, if the Council so desired it, the question of reporting on this bridge and the proposed bridge ,at WhiU& r *
