MUNICIPAL REMITS.

I THREE FROM HAMILTON. At its meeting last night the Hamilton Borough Council adopted the recommendation of the legal and finance committee to forward the following remits to the Municipal Conference for discussion: — Ballot papers used at elections.— Suggesting an alteration in the form of the ballot papers used at an election of councillors so that the name of each candidate shall appear in various positions on the voting papers. Public Works Act and Contributions Towards Roads Outside the Borough and Main Highways Act.—That the conference again protest against the operation of sections 100 and 119 of the Public Works Act 1908 and that it bring to the notice of the Minister - of Public Works that though the Main Highways Act requires boroughs to pay a proportion of the cost of the charges connected with main highways boroughs are given no representation on the Board of Control or District Councils, and that it is against the principles of democratic government that any body of persons who are required to find moneys to pay for public services should have no representative on the board in which is vested the control of these funds. \ Travelling expenses of mayors and councillors when on public business.—■ That the Municipal Corporations Act be so amended as to permit the payment of travelling expenses both ways to members of local bodies travelling on public business.
