PROPOSED PENSION SCHEME.. 1

In the House of Commons Mr RhyS Davies (Labour member for West Houghton) moved: "Thai.the mothers' pensions are inadequate for brihgmg up children, and that it should be paid to all widojiws or mothers whose breadwinners! were incapacitated." He 1 , said mothers" 1 pensions were paid in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and I the United States.
Lady Astor urged that the motion would result in economy. If the Go r yernment could not go the whole waji, it should adopt the New Zealand plaiv which would only cost frona £8,000,000 to £10,0150,000. Mrs Wintringham appealed to th& House not to regard, this as a useless question. The need of perisJoP-V, apart front the poor law, was most urgent. Sir W. Joynson-Hicks pointed out" that the Government was bound to pledges of economy and could hot find i the money for such a s^einc.
The motion was rejected by 248 votes to 184.

During the division on the pensions proposal, the result of the EdgehUl election became known, and there were loud Labour cries of "■Resign." Mr T. Henderson, in an interview in the lobby, said: "ESdgenill means a tremendous break with traditions to the case of the most Tory stronghold of the whole country. }krtt Labonc has got a foothold in Liverpool, Qtfcec constituencies would follow. The C*H vernment wag- thoroughly diseredifeed. Admiral Fuller has been appointed Third Sea Lord.
