Mr 11. T, Flyger, Liberal candidate ror Manawatu, in the course of a political address at" Levin, related an incident of interest to old identities on that coast. In 1828 his grandfather, Captain Samuel Lindsay, arrived off Porirua with his barque, the Medilor. The Maoris went out to the ship, and it was a difficult mater to get rid of them, as the" ship's crew could not speak Maori and the Maoris could not understand English. At length the captain suggested making some iron rods red hot and scaring the natives off. It had the desired effect, but very soon a large force of fighting men, witli Te Rauparaha at the head, put off in canoes, with the intention of attacking the ship. The captain and crew lost no time in getting their ship under sail, and, slipping their anchor, made good their escape. The anchor remains there to the present day.
