Strachey,. writing in the Spectator, says that in 1908 Lord Northcliffe contemplated the appointment of trustees to carry on the Times as a national institution. Mr Strachey suggested the appointment of the Lord Chancellor, the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Primate, and the Vice-Chancellors of Oxford and Cambridge, together with the editor and manager , in order to represent the elements of the community with which the Times was specially concerned. It is still unknown whether the idea was adopted in Lord Northcliffe’s will.
