10 PER CENT LAID UP. .. NO PROFITABLE EMPLOYMENT. AMERICA’S INCREASED TONNAGE. LONDON, August 31. Sir Frederick William Lewis, speaking at Furness, said that 10 per cent of the British maritime fleet was laid up through lack of profitable employment. Britain’s mercantile tonnage was the sam e as pre-war, while the United Stales had increased from under 2,000,000 to 12,500,000. The problem thus present was only soluble by friendly co-operation, with the object of increasing the world’s trade.
