TRADE WITH GERMANY
PROTECTION OF BRITISH INDUSTRY BILL IN PREPARATION. (By Telegraph.—Special to Times). WELLINGTON, Friday. The Minister of Customs (Hon. W. Downie Stewart)', when asked what were the prospects of resumption of trade relations with Germany, replied lhat he expected to introduce shortly a Customs Bill. which would enable this country to impose sufficient duties against a country with Germany’s extraordinary currency to keep trade on a fair footing .for British manufacturers. Australia had power to impose duties up to 75 per cent. New Zealand’s present limit was 25 per cent, and it was not enough. It would probably be from three to six months before trade between this country and Germany could be resumed,, and in the meantime New Zealand could learn froul Ihe experience of Australia-.
