COUNTY CONTESTS. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, August 19. Yorkshire, 266 and 144 for five wickets, declared, drew with Middlesex, 170 and 85 for two. Surrey, 130 and 252 for seven wickets, beat Leicester, 221 and 155. Hampshire, 326 and 158 for two wickets, beat Worcester, 355 and 128. Kent, 351, beat Notts, 120 and 162. Collins took six wickets for 18 runs and ten for 65. Essex, 244 and 87 for five wickets, beat Somerset, 216 and 113. Eastman took seven \wickets for 28 runs. Sussex, 341 and 44 for one wicket, beat Lancashire, 121 and 261. Surrey made 315 for six wickets against Yorkshire (Sandham 53, Shepherd 52, Ducat 49, Hobbs 43). Friday’s county results leave the championship in an exciting position. Yorkshire is still in the lead with a percentage of 73.07, followed by Surrey 71.42, and Nottinghamshire 69.16, the only counties with a chance to win. ; Collins’ feat in taking 16 wickets was a great performance, though not a record, as 12 bowlers have previously taken 17 wickets in first-class matches. The Surrey v. Leicester match was full of thrills. Surrey’s last wickets in the first innings fell to Astill and Skcdding for 28 runs. In Leicester’s second innings, Fender took seven wickets for 37 runs, the last six in 10 overs for 19 runs. Surrey’s victory was mainly due to Knight’s masterly 93 runs. Fender, Woolley and Astill have all completed 1000 runs and luO wickets this season. TEAM .-FOR SOUTH AFRICA. MANN TO BE CAPTAIN. LONDON, August 18.
