RANGIRIRI DEVIATION
—fr
SHORTENING OF THE ROAD.
Further- information relating to the Rangiriri hills deviation, which was the
subject of a statement by the Prime Minister on Thursday, was furnished yesterday by the Public Works Department. The deviation, which will
be about six miles in length, will be slightly shorter than the existing road. > ft will be an excellent grade, with only sufficient rise to bring it up from the level of the present road at the • Whangamarino Station Road junction. Beyond this point the existing- road will be straightened and altered, ;as required, for some distance towards Rangiriri. The formation of the deviation will be 20ft wide. It is hoped to employ about 100 men on the work, which is
being undertaken as a relief work by v the Government. No information is at present available regarding’ the intention of the Government with regard to metalling the road, but it is recognised by the Department that it should be completed before being opened for traffic. The first batch of men to be employed on,the work will be sent to the locality next week.
