MUSIC AND DRAMA

THE HAMILTON SOCIETY. Another indication that Hamilton is taking its rightful place in the cultivation of the arts was provided last night, when the newly-formed Musical and Dramatic Society made its first public appearance before a fairly large audience. The programme presented proved very enjoyable. Local musiclovers so rarely have the opportunity of hearing good instrumental music that they delighted in the trios, quartettes and quintettes for piano and strings given by Miss Heywood, Dr Creen, Messrs Swales, Lusk. Harris and Wood, and only the fact that encores were disallowed prevented the programme from toeing unduly prolonged. The items were: Quintette, Scherzo fC. G. Rcissiger op. 191), Dr I'.rceii. Messrs Swales, Harris. Wood and Lusk; quartette, Menuello (Mozart. No. 12), Messrs Swales, Harris, Wood and Lusk; trio, Allegro Animato (N- W. Cade op. ■'i2), Miss Heywood, Messrs Swales and Lusk: quartette, Menuctto (Mozart No. 14), Messrs Swales, Harris, Wood and Lusk: and quintette, "Tarantelle" (C. G. Reissiger op. 191), Dr Green, Messrs Swales. Harris, Wood and Lusk. All were well played. The vocalist of the evening was Mr J. Cade, whose musical, resonant voice was heard to the fullest advantage in "The Canadian Hunter's Song" (A. Mallinson) and ''Linden Lea," a charmingly melodious Dorset folk song by Vaugnan Williams. The audience liked the latter so much that they insisted upon its repetition despite the rule against encoresThe second part of the programme consisted of J. M. Barrie's half-hour play.
