BOARDED-OUT CHILDREN
ALLEGATIONS OF CRUELTY. MINISTERIAL REFUTATION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.} WELLINGTON, Thursday. Commenting on a. resolution 'Cceutly passed by the Diocesan Synod at Dunedin in reference to cases of alleged cruelty on the part of foster parents .who had charge of children , boarded out under the Industrial School Department, and demanding m- j creased inspection in connection there- I with, the Minister of Education said Hi,' Synod miisl have been seriously misinformed, as otherwise il would n »i have passed such a resolution. During thi' past live years only three crises or ill-treatment had been brought for- ! ward by officers of the Department, Only one case had occurred this year. and this was not due lo the want of : inspection, in view of the fact that the Department has over '2OOO children boarded out in foster homes. The j sweeping statement marie by !he mover of Hie resolution was no| war- j ranted, nor was the Synod warranter! in demanding more vigilant Inspection, \ which is as efficient in all other parts or the Dominion as in Dunedin, where it was said a splendid staff was main- ! lained. j
