AN IMPORTANT BRIDGE, FIRST PILE DRIVEN. Bv Telegraph.—Press Association. DARGAVILLE, Thursday. The ceremony in connection with driving the first pile of the Northern "Wairoa bridge, at Dargaville, look place to-day. The weather was showery, but there 1 was a large crowd from all over the district. The ceremony was performed hy Mr R. .!• Hornhlow (Mayor'. The Government was represented by Messrs MacDonald (Public Trustee) and M,dimes Public Works engineer). Ail apology was received from Hon. ,T. G, Contes Minister of Public Works) and the mcmi'cr for Hie district. The bridge will be lAoOft long, with s ,60ft opening for steamers, and concrete piles. Over 100 tons of cement were' usefi in const ruction. It will cost In the vicinity of E-iO.OOO and lake about two years to complete. There has been a lot of opposition to the site, hut the bridge will eventually bring into close communication with Dargavillc thousands of acres of flrst-calss land and enable communication to bo made via, the road lo Auckland. The proceedings were, very enthusiastic. and mark a very interesting event in the history of North Auckland. A banquet to celebrate the event is to be field to-night. CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER. 3 ARISING OUT OF COLLISION. GHRISTGIH UGH, Thursday. Donald Scott was charged with manslaughter iu the Magistrate’s Court today. The case arose out of a collision between a motor-ear and a bicycle, in Which the cyclist, .tames Abraham, received fatal injuries. Scott was remanded till Friday, bail being allowed.
