CHARGES OF CORRUPTION
THE WORTHINGTON CASE, NEW TRIAL ORDERED. (United Press Association.) Received October 13, 11-25 p.m. MELBOURNE, October 13. The Full Court has ordered a new trial in the Worthington case. J. M. Worthington, Sergeant-at-Arms in the Victorian Parliament, was arrested in May last on a charge of corruptly taking money directly upon account of helping a person to a valuable security which had been stolen. The arrest followed the investigation of a number of recent safe robberies, including the theft of £2BOO worth of war bonds. It is alleged that Worthington sounded the War Bonds Office about purchasing the bonds, saying that he was acting for the man who held them. Acting in concert with the investigating detectives, the office made an arrangement to pay £750 if the bonds were returned. Later, it is stated, Worthington returned to the office and received £750 in cash on signing an undertaking to produce the bonds. In July Worthington was found guilty- He protested his innocence and appealed.
