A TINKERING METHOD

BAILEY WARD COLLECTING HAMILTON'S POOR SPIRIT. BOARD MEMBERS' COMMENT. At this morning's meeting, when the Waikato Hospital Board was discussing Te Waikato Sanatorium proposal as a site for an Old Men's Homo, the chairman remarked "that Harm"! n members clung t' 1 the Waikato Hospital like a river eel to a Maori bob." Mr Barton saw no warranty for such comment, but it prompted Mr Blackmail, i the Te Kuiti representative on the Board, to make some very pointed reference to the Bailey Ward Extension Fund, and the apathy of the people of Hamilton in regard to subscribing to the fund. Mr Blackman characterised the action of the Hamilton people in regard to this appeal as bad, and showing a very poor spirit from an area in which there were so many rich people. This was quite in contrast to what Te Kuiti, a small place of 2000 people, could do in the matter of hospital collecting. There the sum of £ISOO was subscribed for the hospital in that centre. There were'plcnty of people in Hamilton who should be able to give a £SO note to the fund, instead of giving in the tinkering way that they were of collecting pennies and twopennies. "I think it is damnable for such a rich district," Mr Blackman added with emphasis. The chairman remarked that the Hamilton people got £20,000 spent in the borough from the different districts of the Board and in contributing a little sum like £550 to the fund showed very bad spirit, in Mr Bailey's opinion. Mr Johnstone pointed out that the £550 was not all collected in Hamilton, and i-n that sum were moneys from outside Hamilton and from members of the Board itself Mr Bailey pointed to Huntly's contribution of £2OO to the fund. Mr Johnstone said that the committee in its circular pointed out that not 25 per cent of the hospital patients carne from Hamilton, and he was perfectly satisfied that Hamilton did not contribute 25 per cent of the maintenance.
