AUCKLAND EAST ELECTION

WRIT TO BE ISSUED TO-DAY, THREE CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED. A FOURTH PROBABLE. By Telegraph.—Special to Times. WELLINGTON, Monday. Mr Massey has staled that he will move for the issue of a writ in the Auckland East by-election to-morrow.. The reports from Auckland indicate that an interesting contest is going lo lake place. The Government candidate will be Mr Glulha Mackenzie, who polled heavily at the general election when tie opposed the late member, Mr Arthur Myers. Mr Glulha Mackenzie lost tiis sight on Gallipoli, hut he has not allowed this disability to interfere with his interest in political matters. The Liberal Party is to be represented in the contest by Mr G. W. Russell, well-known as a Liberal Minister in the National Government before he lost the Avon seal to Labour at the last general election. The Labour candidate will be either Mr T. Bloodworlh, prominent in official Labour circles, or Mr Lee, who is a member of the Labour Representation Committee and also of the executive of Iho Returned Soldiers’ Association in Auckland, Mr Lee lost an arm in the war and holds Ihc D.S.O.

It has been stated that the National, Progressive and Moderate Labour Party will also have a candidate in the field, but there is no official announcement yet, but Mr C. B. Slatham, On leader of the New Party, has gone to Auckland. fl GIFT TO THE REFORM PARTY. PLETHORA OF CANDIDATES. WELLINGTON, Monday. It looks as if the various sections of the "Opposition—Liberals, Independent Liberals, Moderate Labour, Official Labour. Progressives and Mr Vigor Brown —were conspiring to hand over the Auckland East seat, vacated hy Hon. A. M. Myers, (o the Government. What other result they can expect to achieve from putting six or four or even two candidates into Ihe field it is difficult lo imagine. At the general election Mr Myers defeated Mr Clutha Mackenzie by ,only a narrow majority, and though Mr' Mackenzie may lose some of the soldier-sympathy votes that assisted him on that occasion, he still will make a strong personal appeal to tiie constituency. If Mr Gi. W. Russell were given a clear run, his knowledge, experience and platform ability might carry him through, but a clear run in this case is sure to Ijfe the monopoly of the Reform candidate, whose friends arc not in (lie habit of airing their difference of opinion in the face of Ihe enemy. THE LABOUR CANDIDATE MR LEE SELECTED. (By Telegraph.—-Press Association). AUCKLAND, Tuesday. Mr J. A. Lee, president of the Auckland Labour Party, has been selected hy a ballot of the unions affiliated to the representation cnnimitf.ee as Hie Labour candidate for Auckland East. Mr G. H. Foster announces 1 1 is candidature as a straight Independent.
