THE RIVER TRAFFIC

DIRECT WITH OVERSEAS VESSELS. The s-s. Freetrader arrived in Hamilton on Sunday evening with a full cargo of benzine and lubricating oils. The president (Mr C. Parr) pointed out lo the Chamber of Commerce last night that the Freetrader’s trip on this occasion was a particularly unique one as the cargo was brought from the ship’s side (the Canadian Spinner) direct by rail to Onehnnga and loaded on to the s.s. Huia for Port Waikato and river ports. The whole of the transport arrangements were controlled by the Waikato Shipping Company from (heir head office in Hamilton. This method of carrying imported goods brings Hamilton into almost direct contact by water with overseas vessels, and eliminates a considerable amount of overhead charges which will place Hamilton and other Waikato towns on a much letter basis fordoing business when dealing with competitors from outside.

Members expressed pleasure at this announcement and were pleased to learn that the river traffic, was making such rapid strides and destined to play a prominent part in the commercial and social side of the Waikato.
