STAMP DUTY ON GIFTS

The Full Court delivered Judgment in the ease, of the Bank of New Zealand v. the Commissioner of Stamp Duties (October 7). The ruse was staled by the Commissioner of Taxo s for the purpose of determining whether a gift of £IOO to one uf its retiring employees was liable to gift, duty. The Court was of opinion that the gift of £IOO was not liable to duty. It had been contended that such would not have been Lite intention of (lie Legislature, but it was quite clear that there was no statutory provision imposing any gift duty on a gift of £IOOO Or less. Appellant was allowed costs £7 7s, the costs of the appeal.
