SANK AT SEA
AFTER DOUBLE COLLISION. ' T 6 PERSONS MISSING, Received October 10, 12.5 a..m. LONDON, October 9. The Laird liner Rowan, bound from Glasgow to Dublin, sank off Ailsa Craig at midnight, after a dramatic double collision- There were 93 aboard tho vessel, of whom 50 passengers and 21 -- of the crew were saved. Thirteen of the crew and three passengers are missing. The first collision took place betweea the Rowan and the American steamer Westcamak in a heavy fog. The latter stood by with her forepeak full of water. ’ .■■i-e/* The Clan liner Clan Malcolm then steamed up in the fog and ran into the disabled Rowan, which was sunk. The wireless “5.0.5.” brought the warship Wrestler and the Burney liner Woodcock to the scene, and they picked up the survivors. SANK IN A MINUTE. 1 CRUMPLED UP LIKE MATCHWOOD. Received October 10. 12.40 a.m. LONDON, October 9. All the Rowan’s passengers were, below when the first collision occur-.-, red. They came on deck and prepared’ to put on life belts, but found that the vessel had only a slight list and the ~ crew were hopeful of making port without, assistance- Ten minutes later:"id the Rowan was struck amidships by the Clan Malcolm and crumpled up like matchwood, as one of the survivors said.
The Rowan sank within a minute, a ln*gc hole being lorn in her side. Everyone went down with the ship, as there was no lime to launch - the boats, and it is astonishing that so many were rescued.
Two passengers, including a member of an American jazz band, of whom there were .Ti coloured members aboard, died after being picked up. The captain of the Rowan went down with the ship.
