HIS MAJESTY’S DESIRES. TROUBLED OVER UNEMPLOYMENT. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received October 9, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, October 7. The King, accompanied by the Queen and Princess Mary, visited Manchester. The King, in opening the extension of the Royal Exchange, said ho earnestly hoped that this was an indication that the interruption of the normal course of trade caused by the war was ending. Replying to the civic reception the King said: “I am sorely troubled over the present widespread unemployment which is causing so much suffering among so many of my people. It is my sincere hope that the efforts of the Ministry to alleviate the present and prevent future unemployment, will be successful. I earnestly pray that by the blessing of Divine Providence and the united efforts of all classes of the community we will wipe out the evil effects of the war. and restore the productive and commercial activity of the nation, and thus bring employment, well being, and happiness to my people. When their Majesties returned to London large crowds filled the station, the English awaiting the Royalties and the Irish awaiting the Sinn Fein delegate. The English and Irish vied with each other in giving the Royalties an enthusiastic welcome, a memorable scene. When the Sinn Fciners arrived the same crowd repeated the welcome.
