WORKERS' DWELLINGS

TOWN CLERK URGES HASTE. WORK PROCEEDING SLOWLY. EFFECT ON OVERDRAFT. That an endeavour be made to hasten the completion of workers' dwellings authorised by the Hamilton Council was suggested by the Town Clerk to the Council last night. He did so, he said, in order that there may be some revenue coming in towards the payment of interest and sinking fund, the annual charges for which amount to £2BO 8s 4d. Under the conditions^of-contract the contractor has six months in which to complete the five houses, but although half the time has elapsed, only about a third of the value of the whole contract has been done, even if there is included in "work done" the value of materials on the ground. It appeared, therefore, he said, that if greater progress was not made there would be very little revenue available during the current financial year in the way of rent as a set-off against an amount of £229 lis 2d for interest and sinking fund (this amount representing the amount already paid and to be paid on 20th January next), and as a result the overdraft would be affected by the advance from general account to pay interest-

The Council decided to urge the contractor to complete as quickly as possible several of the houses.
