The Dorsets were ambushed and Colonel Herbert and Quartermaster Harvey wounded, the latter fatally. At the same time some artillery were ambushed at 50 yards' range. The leading gun was wheeled about and shrapnelled the forest with open sights. Details are lacking. UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM ♦— BUSINESS MEN'S SCHEMES. TO REHABILITATE BRITISH TRADE. LENGTHY DEPRESSION PREDICTED. (Australian and N-Z. Cable Assn.) Received October 4, 7.20 p.m. LONDON, October 4. Mr Lloyd George's conference with sis business experts at Gairlock has ended. Mr Lloyd George will outline the Government unemployment proposals in a speech at Inverness, this afternoon, when he receives the freedom of the city. His doctor will not allow him to deliver a public speech, but the Prime Minister is determined to have reporters present, though it has been arranged that the conferring of the Freedom will be private. It is understood that the experts have informed Mr Lloyd George that the country must be prepared to face a depression for two or three years. They have outlined a definite plan for rehabilitating the trade of the Empire, which has deeply impressed Mr Lloyd George.
