NEGOTIATIONS AND METHODS. LORD SALISBURY ASHAMED. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received July 28, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, July 27. Lord Salisbury, in the House of Commons, in seeking a statement about Ireland, said he was opposed to an indefinite delay upon the matter, "as it might be believed that we approve of the method pursued, whereas we feel the great shame involved in the negotiations and arc only awaiting an official statement in order to make our position clear." Lord Birkenhead, in replying, said he was puzzled over the references to "shame," and he did not know for whom Lord Salisbury spoke. He and all his Unionist colleagues were utterly unconscious of shame, either in regard to the negotiations or the terms offered.

Replying to a question in the House of Commons as to whether the Government was aware that De Valera was captured in Dublin on June 22, and that a report of the ambush of British soldiers at Drumcondra was found upon him, Mr Chamberlain said that the Government was fully aware of all the documents found on De Valera when arrested, but they did not propose to publish the results of the examination of such papers.
