IMPERIAL CONFERENCE

•ACIFIC PROBLEMS. PRELIMINARY MEETING PLACE. NOT YET FIXED. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received July 28, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, July 27. In the absence of official statements, conflicting rumours are clouding the main business at the Imperial Conference. Many places and dates have been named for the preliminary Pacific discussion, but the only fact in a maze of uncertainty is that nolhing has been settled. The Imperial Dominion delegates being questioned say that if any meeting place is mentioned it is not as the result of their deliberations, but lias been arranged regardless of them. It is not probable that, any action will be taken without reference to them. Late to-night despatches were still being exchanged with overseas, but those which are most eagerly awaited have not arrived. Till these replies arc received it is clearly impossible to arrange details. It is expected a discussion will be arrived at to-morrow when an-official announcement will bo made regarding the Pacific meeting place. Meanwhile the papers arc changing the scene, regardless of geographical difficulties, and the expressed intentions of those most interested.

Mr Hughes will meet Mr Ba'bington Smith to-morrow with reference to the proposed duplication of Pacific cable.
