FIRE BRIGADE APPEAL

The committee of the Hamilton Fire Brigade Accident Fund met yesterday, and decided that while the concerts and other functions are to be proceeded with, actual collecting on behalf of the Fund shall cease on Weducsday next. It is estimated that in all about £j2so will be raised, and this sum it is proposed to utilise for the benetit of the widow and family of the late fireman George Prince. When tin' appeal was first launched it was anticipated that at least £ISOO would be forthcoming, and it was not thought there would be any difficulty in raising that amount, and certainly there should not be. Having regard to the si/..' and Importance of Hamilton, coupled with the fact that (he two men sacrificed their lives in the act of serving the community, it will not redound to the residents' credit if the committee's appeal is not honoured to the full. It is a matter in which every resident lias an interest, for all who dwell in houses are concerned in the upkeep of an efficient Fire Brigade, and nothing would be so calculated to destroy that efficiency as an indication that those for whom the fireman gives up his ease and leisure care go little for the fact that they refuse to recognise their moral obligations should the need unfortunately arise. We refuse to believe that this ingratitude will he laid to the charge o'' Hamlltonlans, and ore convinced that during the few days that remain those who have not yet subscribed will forward their donations to either the treasurer of the fund (Mr F. \V, I.oxford. Box 58, Hamilton), or to the office of tins paper. Some probably are anticipating a personal' canvass, but, it should be borne in mind that those who have undertaken this work are busy men. and are not in a position to devote all their time to the work, and after all it is no more their responsibility to endeavour to reach the objective than il is that of any other member of the community.
