ANGLO-JAPANESE TREATY
_ CONTEMPLATED RENEWAL. SIR J. FIXDLAY'S STATEMENT, AN INCORRECT REPORT. _______ ...... (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.' Received February 25/9.50 a.m. LONDON, February 24. ;' Sir John Findlay has informed th_" ' Australian Press Association that his recent declaration, regarding the Japanese menace, although published in tha .. form of a signed article, really was au interview in which he was incorrectly reported. The statement should have read that "Australasia would object emphatically, to a renewal of the Japanese Treaty accompanied by amendments in the direction of the relaxation of the Australasian immigration laws, which it' was rumoured wevi imminent through Japanese rressuro on Britain." Sir John Findlay, though he took nai steps to correct the previous article, added that when interviewed he dis- ". cussed fears widely entertained in Australia and New Zealand that Japan was attempting to modify the Treaty in the direction of providing an everwidening- door for immigration. It would be idle to object to the Treaty in the present form, under Which Japanese immigrants are excluded from Australasia, lie considered that the Australasians did not realise the full extent of the menace from Japan, which it is authoritatively estimated would have a population of 12,000,000' a half a century hence.
