WHATAWHATA BRIDGE

TRAFFIC TALLY TO BE TAKEN. COMPLAINTS OF UNFAIRNESS. The question of liability for the cost of the proposed new bridge over the Waipa river at Whatawhata, to substitute the present decrepit structure, is to be decided by a commission which will sit early in the New Year. The Hamilton Borough Council decided, when a conference was recently held to discuss allocations, not to be represented, recognising no liability. Last night the Council received a letter from the Raglan County solicitors (Messrs Wynyard, Skelton, Wilson and Vallancc), who suggested, an behalf of the Raglan Council, that Hamilton should appoint a representative at a tally of traffic over the Whatawhata bridge to be taken for the fortnight from January 9th to 23rd. The result of the tally would bo submitted as evidence at Hie sitting of the Commission to deal with the apportionment of the cost of the proposed new bridge. Cr. Tide! thought it was almost necessary for the Council to be represented at the tally, as at that lime of Hie year there was sure to be a good deal of traffic from Hamilton over the bridge—■ an abnormal amount, owing to the holiday season being on. Cr. Lowry; It is an unfair time to take it. Cr. Barton said that if Mr Scott was to be Hie commissioner ’he was a gentleman who set great store on tallies. The speaker thought the Council should object to the lime Hie tally was to lie taken. Cr. Mason; II will be a eateli tally. The Council decided to be represented.
