HAMILTON COUNCIL

ORDINARY MEETING. The Mayor, Mr J. R, Fow, presided over a meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council last night. There was a full attendance with the exception of Crs. McKinnon and Rafferty, who were granted leave of absence. Mr James Reid applied for-payment of £3O 12s 6d for work done in formation of Firth street, at the entrance to Ids property.—To be paid.

The Earthenware Pipe Company, Ltd. notified that it was hoped to forward approved draft of agreement regarding drain-pipes within the next few days.— Received.

W. L. Oldham and L. Hardcastlo applied for driver’s licenses.—Granted. Messrs Gillies; Ferguson and Aston forwarded for sealing dedication of sheet on Mr H. Gillies’ property.—Seal to be attached.

The Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Co. applied for the Council’s indemnity insurance for 1921.—Referred to the Legal and Finance Committee.

The Hamilton Regatta Committee applied for permission to make a charge for admission to the river bank near the traffic bridge cn Anniversary Day.— Granted.

The Hamilton Regatta Committee brought under the notice of the Council the need for the erection of public conveniences on the river bank.—Referred to the Works Committee.

Mr A. B. Holme complained that he had been unfairly treated in regard to wages paid to him as foreman, and asked for an increase. He stated that ttic recent award, paid retrospectively to May 1, resulted in casual employees being paid at a higher rate over a period of several weeks than the foremen were receiving.—Referred to the Legal and Finance Committee.

The Chief Inspector of Explosives asked if Inc Council wished to be gazetted a licensing authority under the Explosive and Dangerous Goods Amendment Act, 1920.—Referred to the Legal and Finance Committee.

The Carnegie Corporation, New York, asked for further information in regard to the proposed library at Frankton. They pointed out that £IOO a year was not sufficient to cover Hie cost of carrying on a library in a building costing £BOOO. It would he necessary to pledge maintenance of (lie library on the proportional basis originally proposed, which would involve £2o.'! annually from taxes for a building costing £3500. The matter was left with the Legal and Finance Committee to frame a reply.
