CLAUDELANDS BUSH

* AREA TO BE DISPOSED OF BY WAIKATO A. AND P. ASSOC. FIRST OFFER TO BOROUGH.

At* the meeting of the Waikato A. and P. Association this morning there was a consensus of opinion amongst members that belter provision would have to be made for Hie accommodation of cattle exhibits, which it wars recognised would be the chief feature of future shows. To enable this to fie done, funds would have to be raised, and this was the problem which now faced Die Association. Schemes for raising the money were discussed, and it was pointed out that the nine acres of land upon which tlie native bush is situated were no asset to tlie Association, and that if they could be disposed of it would simplify the Association’s finance and enable the erection of shed accommodation for dairy cattle to be proceeded with at once. The members of the executive agreed that it would be a shame to fell the bush, but the Association was not in a position to preserve it, and the useful must, so far as they were concerned, take precedence of the scenic. It was thought that the Borough should acquire it as a scenic reserve, for whicli purpose the Government would'probably give some assistance.

Various methods of realising on the property wore discussed, and it was eventually decided to give the Borough the first refusal, the secretary being instructed to write to the Council intimating that the Association purposed disposing of the land and inquiring if they were prepared to enter into negotiations for its acquirement for the people of Hamilton. Mr T. Clarkin gave notice that should the Council not see its way to consider the matter, he would move at a future meeting: “That a special meeting of members of the Association be convened to authorise the sale of the land, the proceeds of the sate to be devoted to the equipment of the grounds for show purposes.”
