SENSATION AT GISBORNE
EXPLOSION ON A TRAIN. ■■■■ ii ■■ m BLASTING POWDER UNDER A SEAT. SIX PERSONS INJURED. By Telegraph—Press Association. GISBORNE, Tuesday. Just as the 4.5 p.m. train was about to leave for Motohora.a loud report occurred, and a burst of flame came from a carriage. All the five occupants received burns, and also a woman on the carriage platform. Glass blew out of the door, and some ciiruek her. The explosion was caused by a parcel of blasting powder under a carriage scat. A man saw a brown paper parcel alight, and put his foot on it. This detonated the package. It being a smoking carriage, a match dropped on the floor would easily set light to the paper. Another parcel was found on the carriage rack, but no owner has yet been traced.
The injured are John Toluolf, Jos. Burns, Tlios. Kearns, Jas. Leeper, and Miss Lena Hill.
Leeper had only been discharged from the hospital that mornmg, an 1 was on his way home.
