Mr R. McCallum, member for Wairau, who has been on a short visit to Waikato, returned to Wellington by last night's express. Mr Oliver Duff, 8.A., has been appointed editor of Timaru Herald. He is a graduate of Otago University, and saw service in the South African war. Major A. Tattersali, of the 4th (Waikato) Mounted Rifles, has been transferred to the Reserve of officers. The famous author and spiritualist, Sir Conan Doyle, arrived at Auckland from Sydney by the Maheno last evening. The Anglican Bishop of Auckland, Dr. A. W. Averill, accompanied by Mrs and Miss Averill, returned to Auckland last evening by the Port Napier from Sydney.

Senior-Sergeant D., J. Cummings, of the Christchurch Police Force, who lias been seriously ill, has reached the convalescent stage, and will visit thu Waikato to recuperate. His Honor, the Chief Justice, Sir Robert Stout, arrived in Hamilton yesterday afternoon, and is staying at tiie Hamilton Hotel. He is presiding at the sitting of the Supreme Court which opened to-day. Mr and Mrs W. Runciman left Hamilton by car this morning for Takapuna, where they will take up their residence. Mr Runciman was a great worker for the Waikato Winter Show, and will be greatly missed in this district. Commissioner Hodder, head of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, accompanied by Colonel Bray and Brigadier Toorner, left Hamilton for Auckland by the Main Trunk express this morning. They will afterwards proceed to Gisborne, where the Commissioner will open a maternity home given by the Murphy family in memory of the late Mr P." Murphy. A sad discovery was made last evening by Mr F. E. N. Gaudin, of Norwood Road, Bayswater, who returned home at 7.30 o'clock to find his father, Mr Frederick Gaudin, aged 78 years, lying dead on his bed witli a bullet wound in his breast. A loaded six-chambered revolver, with one cartridge discharged, was found lying beside the body. The deceased left a note stating that he was suffering from depression. Deceased was a well-known old resident of Hamilton, he having, in the early days, been a storekeeper in Hamilton, and afterwards took over the proprietorship of the Waikato Hotel. He with his family went to Auckland some 30 years ago, and has resided there ever since. Mrs Gaudin pre-deceased her husband. ...

At the Theatre Royal Tea Rooms, yesterday afternoon, opportunity was taken by the teachers of Hamilton to bid farewell to Mr M. Priestley, school inspector, who has been transferred to Auckland. About 50 teachers were present. Mr W. H. Worsley, headmaster of the West School, who presided, referred in highly laudatory terms to the work done by Mr Priestley in the cause of education, and voiced tiie general regret felt at his departure. The teachers would be glad to welcome him back at any time, and would always be glad to hear of his happiness and prosperity. Mr F. H. Brown, headmaster of the East School, endorsed Mr Worsley's remarks. . A tribute was also paid to the work of Inspector McKcnzie. Messrs Priestley and McKenzie suitably acknowledged the kindly re/narks and the good wishes. During the afternoon Misses Fergusson and McLeod sang, Miss Blennerhassett and Messrs Harris and Gilbert gave an instrumental item, and Mr Priestley spoke entertainingly of his experiences as an inspector. A dainty afternoon tea was ,served. A pleasant function, which was marked with much cordiality, was brought to a close by the singing of "Auld Lang Syne."
