«—, A CONSIGNMENT SEIZED. DISCOVERY ON THE MARAMA. By' Telegraph—Press Association. X" WELLINGTON, Monday. About midnight last night the Harbour Board's chief custodian, named Mason, who is also a special constable, observed a motor car laden with what ~■ appeared to be luggage enter the I Queen's Wharf gates and proceed to ' the Marama. Mason and one of his aswent to investigate, and the of the vessel told them that the suit cases were luggage. Thcjy went down to the stewards' quarters, and found two men employed on the vessel unpacking bottles of whisky from half a dozen suit cases and stowing the liquor in lockers. The men produced a receipt, which was evidently bona-iide, from a wine and spirit Arm for payment for the whisky. Altogether 240 bottles which were seized were found in the stewards' quarters. The Marama is to sail for San Francisco to-morrow, so that the liquor would have been taken to the Californlan port. The motor car was making a second visit to the Marama when the custodian became aware oi its mission. Under the prohibition laws of the United States, any attempt to get liquor ashore there may render the master of the vessel in which it is brought liable to a heavy penalty.
