Thirty Democrats held an informal conference, at which they discussed the compromise reservations. Senator Hitchcock afterwards stated: "I certainly think headway is being made with the compromise." Peace Treaty has been abandoned as the factions have been unable to reach an agreement. AMERICA LOSING HEAVILY. ON INVESTMENTS ABROAD. Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received January 15, 11.55 a.m. NEW YORK, Jan. 14. Mr Alexander, Secretary of Commerce, addressing manufacturers, said that the United States was losing heavily on investments abroad in consequence of the non-ratification of peace, An improvement in foreign exchange was expected soon.
PROGRESS IN NEGOTIATIONS. (Australian andN.Z. Cable Assn.) Received January 15, 11 a.m. WASHINGTON, Jan. 13. The Republican "mild reservationists" announce that they have reached accord with the Democrats tfpon four items iii the proposed Treaty compromise. Mr Lodge's reservation demanding the approval of other nations to all reservations adopted will be eliminated, but his three resolutions dealing with Shantung, the labour clause and the League, voting power have been accepted by the Democrats.. It is believed that a compromise will be successful if the conference can reach an agreement on Mr Lodge's reservations dealing with article X, and the Monroe doctrine.
