THE AIR SERVICE
EXPERIMENTS IN NEW ZEALAND. Further experiments are in progress ir connection with the proposed establishment of postal air service routes in various parts of the Dominion. Speaking to a New Zealand Times reporter, the Hon. J. G. Coates,-Postmaster-Gen-eral, stated that in England such services have already proved a commercial success in cases where ordinary rates have been charged, but strange to say where excess rales have been levied the services have not been commercially successful. Up to 100 miles or so the aeroplane could compete to advantage with the telegraph and telephone, so there should be a good future before the Postal Air Service in New Zealand. “If we can amalgamate the Aeroplane Defence Service with the Postal Air Service,” he said, “it would, I think, be a very good proposition. Our great difficulty at present is the lack of sufficient machines of the right stamp. We must have passenger carrying planes to make a success of it. The machines must carry at least two.” . The Postmaster-General hopes to have a further report on Postal Air Service mails in New Zealand early this week.
