RAILWAYMEN'S WAGES
MINISTERS IN CONSULTATION. GOVERNMENT TO STAND FIRM. MISAPPREHENSION AS TO TERMS. Reuter. Received January 12, 9’ p-.m. LONDON, January 11. In response to a summons from .Mr Lloyd' George respecting the railway situation. Sir Eric Geddcs and Sir R. 3. Horne have gone to Paris. Consequently the conference between the railwayrnen and Sir Eric Geddes is postponed till the l.th inst. Cabinet will meet on the same day, and at the meeting it is- expected that a decision will be reached regarding the railwaymen’s rejection of the Government’s offer.
It is pointed out in Government circles that if the men’s full demands were conceded the nation would have fought the last strike in vaini
It Ik regarded' as probable that the Government will be unable to recede from the position already taken up;, while it is believed' that the- hostility of branches of the Railwaymcn'sSociety lo the terms' arranged with the leaders is largely due to misapprehension.
