SLAUGHTER OF CALVES
i > 40,000 KILLED IN WAIKATO. THE DISTRICT OVERSTOCKED. The statement that about 40,000 calves have been killed in the Waikato durffag the past twelve months, is confirmed by the local stock inspector, Mr R. who attributes the great slaughter to the- feet that the district is unable to absorb the young stock. Land that previously was used for gracing and stock-roaring has, during the past few years, been cut up for the more profitable use of dairying, and as litlle additional land had been broken in : during the war, there was no room for the young stock. The district, as a matter of fact, was overstocked, and it did not pay farmers to rear calves. During the war cattle had increased in Mew Zealand by a million, and last year alone, in Waikato, 70,000 calves were inoculated against blackleg. The district, he said, could still afford to part with more of its stock.
